What is Menstruation?
Menstruation (also called Menses, Menstrual period, Period) is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs as part of a woman's monthly cycle- the monthly shedding of the lining of the uterus through the vagina.
The menstrual cycle is characterized by the rise and fall of hormones. Menstruation is triggered by falling progesterone levels and is a sign that pregnancy has not occurred.
This is the cycle of fertility that affects most females from their teenage years through to menopause, when periods stop.
What is Period pain?
Menstrual cramps are throbbing or cramping pains in the lower abdomen. Many women normally have menstrual cramps just before and during their menstrual periods. They are most likely caused by an excess of prostaglandins—hormone-like compounds that are released from the uterine lining (the endometrium) as it prepares to be shed. Prostaglandins help the uterus contract and relax, so that the endometrium can detach and flow out of your body. They are a necessary part of the process, but in excess, they cause pain.
Around 80% of women experience period pain during menstruation, especially on the first day; and 5% to 10% of women face the pain is severe enough to disrupt their daily life, i.e. work, school, sport etc.
In clinical studies, there are 7 different pain levels of period cramps
Level 1 : Painless
If you feel 0 pain at all during period days, Congratulations! You are at the paradise, where all the girls wish to be at
Level 2 : Uncomfortable
At this level, the pain is not too obvious. However you will feel slightly uncomfortable at the lower abdominal area. The sensation will keep you off from sitting still and causing your frustration
Level 3 : Stomachache
The pain at the at lower abdominal area is significant and magnified at this stage. You will even start to having cold sweats on the face, hands & feet and over the body
Level 4 : Food-Poisoning-Level
The pain is getting more serious and it feels like a 24 hours diarrhea. Lying down may make you feel slightly better but the pain is striking strongly every few minutes!
Level 5 : MMA-Punch-Level
You can't really speak. You can't really think properly.
The pain is making you a little nauseous and you could throw up anytime. It does feel like continuous punching on your tummy
Level 6 : Fly-Kick-Level
Your eyes are starting to get a little bit blurry. The pain is making you unable to get down off bed, and you can't really walk :( Perhaps you can try to imagine someone is constantly fly kicking your stomach
Level 7 : Wrecking-Ball-Level
"I came in like a wrecking ball....." The pain level is making you go unconscious, you are most likely at the hospital when you wake up :( The pain feel like a wrecking spiky metal ball hitting on your stomach
